Pomeranian Dogs

Pomeranian Dogs - A Great Breed

Developed in the Prussian Region of Pomerania, Pomeranian dogs were once much larger than they are today..  Poms didn’t become popular in England until the late 1800’s when Queen Victoria brought some back with her.. However today Pomeranians are generally bred as loving companions and also show dogs.

The Pomeranian has been recognized by the AKC since 1888 where it is part of the Toy Group. The breed standard is 7 - twelve inches tall and three to seven pounds in weight.  With the right food and veterinary care, you can expect a lifespan of 15 years for this dog.

The wedged shaped head and pointed ears of the Pom give it a fox like appearance. They have an intelligent expression with dark, almond shaped eyes and either a dark nose or one that matches their coat. The tail is a plume that fans forward on the back. A Pomeranian should have a generous ruff around both the chest and neck region. According to breed standards, the coat can be solid or parti colored.   Coat colors for the Pom are  Brown, red, cream or white, orange, black and blue.

Pomeranian dogs are loyal to their owners, eager to learn and smart. But these eager dogs can also be a bit temperamental and willful at times.  While Poms are quite adept at learning tricks, you do need to train them with kind firmness or they might think they are the boss.

The docile nature and affectionate temperament of this dog make it a fine choice for a show dog and pet.  Showing great independence for a Toy breed dogy, the Pomeranian has a curious and alert personality. They are perfect for apartments since they do not need a yard.

Some health problems common to this breed include skin problems, heart problems, slipped stifle and dislocated patella as well as eye infections. They also have problems with their teeth so you must brush the teeth at home as well as see the vet yearly for a cleaning.

A dense, double coat is the tradmark for Pomeranian dogs and this coat can get matted very easily so daily brushing is required. Take care to crush the cotton like undercoat as well as the long silky outer coat. They also must have their ears cleaned regularly as well as the area around their eyes.
